The senior and founding partner of Williams Coulson, Robert B. Williams leads the firm with over 30 years experience in providing sophisticated business, tax, and employee benefit planning for large and small businesses. His practice includes estate, tax, and retirement planning for individuals, as well as trust planning issues.

Mr. Williams regularly handles matters involving tax, employee benefits, insurance, and business planning for publicly-held, closely-held, and family businesses of all sizes. He also provides tax, insurance, and estate planning for executives of Fortune 500 corporations and the owners of real estate, natural resource, manufacturing, sales, service and other business concerns. He supervises many estate and trust administration matters.

Mr. Williams has successfully litigated probate cases before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and tax cases before the United States Claims Court, Tax Court, and U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. He briefed and argued American Standard, Inc. v. United States, which is the only case in which a consolidated return regulation has been invalidated on both substantive and procedural grounds.

Mr. Williams received his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center, where he was managing editor of the Georgetown Law Journal, and his undergraduate degree from Swarthmore College. From 1977 through 1995, Mr. Williams was a partner of Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott, where he served as chairman of the Tax Department from 1984 to 1987.

Mr. Williams is a founder and first chairperson of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Family Firm Institute, an inter-disciplinary organization that serves family businesses. He is also a member of the Family Business Consortium, whose members provide specialized consulting services to family business owners.

He is a fellow of the American College of Trusts and Estates Counsel and is listed in both the Tax and Employee Benefits and the Estates and Trusts sections of the 1994-95 editions of The Best Lawyers in America. Mr. Williams has attained the designation as an Accredited Estate Planner from the National Association of Estate Planning Councils.

A past chairman of the Penn State Tax Conference and the Allegheny Tax Society, Mr. Williams frequently makes presentations on estate planning, tax, employee benefits, and insurance topics. He is an active member of the Pittsburgh Tax Club, Estate Planning Council of Pittsburgh and Family Firm Institute.

Mr. Williams is also active in religious, charitable and service organizations, including Rotary International and Rotary Foundation. He currently chairs the professionals' committee of the United Way Endowment.
